Alas, those days are gone b y F reidaMarieCru m p Greetings from Poosey. I love my neighbors. I really do. They’re a youngish family with teenage kids and just look- ing across the yard and watching them grow has been a thrill for Herb and I. In fact, Herb would never admit it, but he has emotionally adopted their oldest girl, Mindy. The man can fall asleep at the drop of a hat, but when his young friend is out late at night he can’t fall asleep until he sees the lights of her headlights pull into the drive. So, far be it from me to criticize such wonderful neighbors. But every time I go next door to visit, I get a creepy feeling that something strange is happening. I was having coffee yesterday with Mrs. Parsons after the kids had taken off for school and just as I was about to take a sip I heard a Ding! from inside her purse, then a voice saying, “Don’t forget. You need milk.” Thinking she was talking to me I stopped mid-gulp and said, “No, I take mine black.” Mrs. P smiled at me and said, “No Freida, that was my phone.” Her phone needed milk? “It keeps track of when I buy things and reminds me when I’m running low.” This was a bit unnerving, but I sipped on, then another Ding! “Reminder ...hair appointment, two o’clock p.m .” Her phone could see her hair? “It’s my digital butler.” Being a gal who still writes things in the calendar squares on my kitchen wall I was flummoxed. I hurriedly downed the rest of my coffee and hustled my buns back across the yard before my coffee cup started talking to me. It so happened that this was pre-prom season and the Parson ladies had been dress shopping so they invited me over that evening to sit for a mini fashion show. As I walked in the front door I saw their son, Ricky, on his cell phone, and, yes, I am a nosey neighbor, so I listened in. He was sending a text to a friend. But instead of typing he was talking into his phone. No doubt his friend was talk-texting back at him. So, why didn’t the two kids just call each other? I still hang my sheets on a clothesline so how I should I know? Papa Bill was at his laptop, headphones straddling his neck, reviewing sales re- ports while dictating into his screen. Since no one in the liv- ing room seemed much into human conversa- tion, I steered myself to- ward the back bedroom where I could hear the ladies of the house gig- gling. Mindy and Mom were sitting on the bed peering happily into Mindy’s iPhone. “Freida! Take a look! Which dress should I get?” They turned the little screen toward me and there was my little neighbor girl, decked out in a gorgeous blue dress, all smiles and overflowing with teenage excitement. “We haven’t picked one out yet,” said Mrs. P. “We wanted to know what you thought first.” I was honored since it had been a long time since I’d shopped for prom dresses. Then Mindy pushed a button on her phone and the pic- ture switched to another dress. “You tried on sev- eral?” I asked. “Oh no. I didn’t actually try any of them on yet. You send them your picture and the website puts you in each dress.” I was dumbstruck. You can now try on dresses without even getting out of your chair? So, we girls spent the next hour whisking our way through dress after dress with Mindy’s face appearing magically with each flick of her thumb. It was a lot faster than spending the morning in a dress shop but... well, I don’t know. I missed the magic and beauty of a real girl in a real dress. We finally decided upon a sweet little burgundy number that was short enough to please Mindy but just long enough to appease her mother. Then I excused myself and headed out the door, giving a silent nod of goodbye to Ricky on his phone and Bill talking to his laptop computer. It was a nice evening. So, I stopped mid-yard and looked back at the Parsons’ home, windows aglow with digital screens. Far be it from me to judge, but it seemed as if my neighbors were spending their evening talking to machines but seldom to each other. I remember an evening some 20 years ago when our little burg suffered a power outage in the early evening and folks stared at the blank screens on their TV sets and walked out into their yards. It was a beautiful evening and before we knew what was happening someone had retrieved an old croquet set from the garage, lawn darts appeared out of nowhere along with a crock of iced tea and a tray of chocolate chip cookies. For two hours our neighbor- hood laughed and loved and ...talked. Alas, those days are gone. We now have batteries. You ever ‘round Poosey, stop by. We may not answer the door but you’ll enjoy the trip. all in stock turkey items!
